The Montessori School in East Lansing was established in 1982 as a non-profit, nondiscriminatory Preschool and Kindergarten. We are licensed by the State of Michigan, Family Independence Agency, to care for children ages 1 to 6 years with a licensed capacity of 81 children in the Toddler and Primary program.
Primary classrooms are composed of children spanning three years, and are balanced in age groupings and sex of the children. The Elementary program was established in 1994. Currently the school's elementary program combines in a single classroom children aged 6-12). In the fall of 2004, the Montessori Center of East Lansing opened a Toddler program located in the "Blue House" just northwest of the school. This program offers full day instruction (7:30 a.m. 5:45 p.m.). The community consists of 12 children ages 15 months to 2.5 years.
Each primary and elementary classroom is staffed with a Montessori Director/ess. He/she holds a diploma from a certified Montessori Training Center and a related Master or Bachelor Degree. The Classroom Assistant is trained by the Director/ess while a certified Montessori Training Center trains an Intern. The classroom Assistant also participates in a three-day Montessori Theory & Practice paraprofessional workshop. The Administrator holds a Montessori Diploma and Michigan Elementary Continuing Teaching Certificate.
